1. Global Warming From Fossil Fuels

As of May 2023, the concentration of CO2 (carbon dioxide) in the Earth's atmosphere is approximately 420.00 parts per million (ppm). This high level of CO2 is a major environmental issue as it contributes to global warming. Compared to pre-industrial levels, the global temperature has risen by 1.15 degrees Celsius. The last time CO2 levels were as high as they are now was more than 4 million years ago.

The increase in greenhouse gas emissions traps the sun's heat, leading to a rise in global temperatures. This has resulted in a range of catastrophic events worldwide. For example, Australia and the US have experienced extremely destructive bushfire seasons, while locust swarms have caused significant agricultural damage in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Even Antarctica has witnessed a heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 20 degrees Celsius for the first time.

Scientists continuously warn that the planet has surpassed various tipping points, which could have severe consequences. These include the acceleration of permafrost melt in Arctic regions, the unprecedented melting of the Greenland ice sheet, the ongoing sixth mass extinction, and increased deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, among other concerns.

2.Food Waste

People love food. But unfortunately, we tend to waste a ton of it. Yep, it's a real problem. The shocking reality of food waste will make you cringe. Firstly, the scale of the problem is mind-boggling. We waste so much food that could have been used to feed the hungry. Secondly, the environmental impact is no joke. Food waste contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Time to take this seriously, right?

3. Plastic Pollution

Plastic pollution is a critical environmental issue prevalent in the world today. Plastic is a non-biodegradable substance that persists in the environment for centuries, causing serious harm to wildlife and ecosystems.

Here are some shocking facts about plastic pollution:

- Plastic waste is contaminating our oceans and threatening marine life. According to a report from the World Economic Forum, by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. - Microplastics, tiny particles of plastic, have been found in the food we eat, the water we drink, and even the air we breathe. These particles can have harmful health effects on humans and wildlife. - Only 9% of plastic waste is recycled, leaving the rest to end up in landfills or pollute our environment.

It is essential that we take steps to reduce our plastic use and increase recycling efforts. Some tips to reduce plastic pollution include:

- Use reusable bags, bottles, and containers instead of single-use plastic ones. - Avoid products with excessive packaging. - Recycle plastics properly. - Support legislation that reduces plastic pollution.

Every small step counts in contributing towards reducing plastic pollution and protecting our planet.
